History
This is one of the best continental, shorthaired pointer breeds originating from France. Characteristic for this dog are resourcefulness, very good sense of smell, a rigid stand and innate tendency to apport. It was bred in the province of Auvergne and its appearance is associated with the Middle Ages. Some French experts believe that the ancestors of these dogs were brought by the Knights of the Order of Malta, who, returning from the Crusades in the Middle East, brought with them hounds with drooping ears. Most, however, believe that the Auvergne Pointing Dog is just one of the varieties of the French braque, widespread at that time in France, and its specific color is a result of mutational change, reinforced by way of rigorous selection of animals. This dog is also known as Blue Braque of Auvergne . Called because of the color of the coat - scattered on white background black spots surrounded by bluish edge of mixed black and white hairs.

Physical characteristics
The Auvergne Pointing Dog is muscular and well built with elegant forms and balanced nervous system. The head is elongated, with an average defined stop. The muzzle is massive, the nose is large and always black. The eyes are large, oval-shaped, with the color of dark hazel. The ears are set obliquely, covered with soft and shiny hair. The neck is long, slightly curved. The tail is short, with a length of 15-20 cm. The coat is short and smooth.
Average height is between 55 and 60 cm and weight between 22 and 25 kg.
This breed posses excellent working qualities both in the fields and the woods.

Character and behavior
The Auvergne Pointing Dog is described as sweet, very affectionate, intelligent and obedient in the FCI standard. The training consists mainly developing its natural qualities. The sense of smell is powerful. He likes to share the life of the family.

Training and education
The Auvergne Pointing Dog is courageous, passionate and versatile. It adapts easily to all vegetation, hunting habits of his master with which it naturally keeps in touch. He is as good as retriever, but its gallop is economical allowing it to go to the end of the longest days of hunting.
Docility and dedication make the puppy easy for education, especially when seeking to gradually channel its natural qualities excluding any brutality.
It is a perfect companion and ideal partner of the hunter.

Health problems
The Auvergne Pointing Dog do not suffer of any particular racial pathology, but it may be affected by the most common diseases: entropion, ear infections, metritis, dilatation-torsion of the stomach. No case of hip dysplasia was ever reported.
The average life expectancy the same as in most of the pointers – 12 to 13 years.

Grooming and care
A healthy and balanced diet provides the puppy harmonious growth and contributes to the well-being, the shape and the dog's life. The power supply must meet the specific needs of the puppy or adult pointer, depending on their age, size or activities (work, sports, etc …). This is especially relevant if you plan to use your dog for hunting.
It does not need special grooming,. Still, some good brushing when moulting is strongly recommended. Monitoring and weekly cleaning of ears and eyes is also a good idea.

Children and other pets
The Auvergne Pointing Dog acts perfectly in the presence of young children and is a great family member. You should be careful thought when it comes to small animals, rodents and other pets.

Interesting facts
The Auvergne Pointing Dog is not widespread in Europe, except of course in France where are the best known breeders and puppies for sale.
In contrast of the situation in Europe, this dog is really popular in Lebanon, Canada and the United States. It is also called Bleu d'Auvergne.
