The Black and Tan Coonhound originates from the United States and is used for hunting raccoons.
The history of the breed dates back to the XIth century, when in England was created its predecessor – the Talbot hound. During the great geographical discoveries some of these dogs were brought to the New World and later were crossed with Bloodhound and Foxhound. The resultant Virginia Foxhound breed , became later Black and Tan Coonhound and was recognized by the AKC in 1945.
The Black and Tan Coonhound weighs between 29 and 59 kg and is 58-69 cm high. He has a thick and short coat, smooth to the touch, with black and tan color. From the skull to the nose the head size is about 25 cm in males and from 17 to 21 cm in females. The neck is muscular, sloping, medium length. The ears are long, enclosing his face, but his expression is typical for a hunting dogs. The head and tail carriage is proud and alert, the top line remains level.
