English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan)
These dogs have very well expressed hunting qualities and extremely lively temperament, but because of their small size they become an ideal pet for people living in an apartment.
This terrier really looks like a toy. It is known as a miniature version of the Manchester terrier, from whom it probably originated. Many canine specialists think that The English Toy Terrier, along with the Manchester terrier, is the most ancient terrier breed in the world. We know with certainty that at the beginning all terriers were classified in two versions: Scotland and English type. In 1828 Thomas Brown divided the general term "terrier" in two specific groups: Scottish terrier and English terrier.
The English Toy Terrier has a slim, elegant and proportionate body. His head is long, wedge-shaped, with flat skull and slightly pronounced stop. The snout is long and sharp, with black nose. The ears are set high, small and thin, sticking up and pointed at the end; not docked. The eyes are medium and dark coloring. The neck is not very long, well muscled. The back is straight and short. The limbs are relatively long, straight and slender, with well developed muscles. The feet are small, with arched toes, which have black nails. The tail is set low, medium long, thin, tapering towards the top. The fur is short, dense, close-fitting to the body, the hair is soft, thin and straight. The main Coloration is black with tan spots on the feet, thighs, nose, above the eyebrows and inside the ears. Stains should be clearly distinguished from the background color.
According to the AKC standard, the height of the English Toy Terrier should be between 25 and 30 cm and the weight – between 3 and 4 kg.
Character and behavior
This beautiful puppy possesses the temperament of a real terrier. Overall, they are friendly, affectionate, and totally attached to the entire family. They could easily live in either the countryside or town.
Training and education
During training you should be consistent and calm, because these dogs can be stubborn, independent and are inquisitive by nature. They should be socialized with children and other pets in the house from an early age.
The English Toy Terrier looks fragile and skinny, but he loves long walks and games and can play for hours without getting tired.
These dogs did suffer from a lot of health issues in the beginning, but breeders have done an amazing job since the 1950’s and now almost all puppies for sale are genetically healthy. Nevertheless, some dogs could suffer from von Willebrands disease (bleeding disorder), Patellar luxation (dislocated kneecap) and BAER (deafness).
The average life span is around 12 – 13 years.
Grooming and care
You should brush the coat at least 3-4 times a week and more often in the spring and autumn when the hair falls a lot. It is recommended to clip it every two months, and to maintain it short for hygienic reasons. You should regularly check the ears to prevent infections. The hair on the feet should also be abolished.
Children and other pets
The English Toy Terrier gets along very well with children, regardless of their age. Remember that this dog was used as a rabbit and rat hunter, so he is capable of attacking small animals and even birds.
The English Toy Terrier was very popular in the UK during the second half of the XIX century. Representatives of this breed could be seen almost everywhere – houses, government buildings, gardens and even ships, where they chased rats.
