History
The French Spaniel has a long history, during which the breed experienced a lot of ups and downs. These hunting dogs were popular in France in the early 16th century. After a couple of decades, they lost their popularity, but in the late 19th century they regain it. There are theories that the ancestors of the French Spaniel are from Spain, others argue that their ancestors are called Quail terrier.
The first standard was written in 1891 and has been updated many times. This is the tallest of all spaniels. The breed was officially recognized in 1955.

Physical characteristics
The French Spaniel has a slim body, covered with a thick, waterproof coat that is longer on the ears, belly, tail and rear limbs. The height varies from 55 to 61 cm and the weight is around 25 kg. The head is of medium size, in proportion to the body. The eyes are large, dark amber colored, oval. The ears are hanging, covered with wavy, soft fur. Coloration most often occurs in white with Liver spots.

Training and education
This dog is focused on its master and not lose contact with him even during the hunt. French Spaniel is an extremely intelligent animal and his training will seem like child's play. For a successful result, it is better to make schedule and sequence of training and commands. This dog loves to swim and is definitely a suitable breed for rescue training. Rough methods will not lead to success in learning, so give them up.

Health problems
French spaniels are a relatively healthy breed. A feature about them is their ability to adapt to different climates - hot or cold. They may suffer from hip dysplasia and ear infections, but it can be prevented through regular examinations. Another weakness of the French spaniel is that their eyes are prone to vision problems and cataracts. The average life expectancy is about 10 - 12 years.

Grooming and care
Hunting breeds traditionally feel better in the countryside, but French Spaniel can also adapt to live in an apartment as long as he has enough space and time to run and play. The coat should be brushed twice a week, to avoid felting and look better. Bathing should be done only when necessary. However, you should regularly clean your puppy's ears. For healthy appearance cook occasionally homemade food containing vitamins and minerals. Their menu should be varied as a medium-sized dog needs 100 grams of protein a day, 200 grams of carbohydrates and 30-40gr fats.
French Spaniel is considered a light shedder and therefore is the perfect companion for people with allergies.

Children and other pets
Representatives of the breed get along perfectly with children and love to play with them. They also have no problem to communicate with other pets.
