The Hanoverian Scenthound (German: Hannoverscher Schweißhund) is a German breed of dogs. Its ancestors are the so-called "Discoverers" of the early Middle Ages. Explorers and founders of the breed "Barka" already hunted in different parts of Europe at the time of the old Germanic tribes (500 BCE). With the appearance of firearms the methods of hunting changed a lot. Dogs were more needed to look for wounded prey. "Discoverers" responded best to the new fishery, and become bloodhounds. Especially in the hunting region of Hannover this breed was further developed and preserved.
Registered in 1894, the "Verein Hirschmann" took care of these dogs and this is the club where the breed Hanover Hound is established. Since then, the breeding continued attentively and strictly to preserve their working qualities and they became specialists in finding cloven-hoofed animals.
The breed is recognized by UKC and FCI but is still not accepted by AKC.
This is a medium size dog, powerful and very well proportioned. The muscled hind and fore limbs help the hound in its tireless work. The deep, broad chest provides capacity for the lungs and enables strenuous, long chases. The wrinkled, beautiful forehead and dark eyes give the typical serious expression. Characteristic for the breed is the red primary color of the coat which can be pale or dark brown, looking almost black.
The average height is about 50-55 cm and the weight is between 36 and 44 kg.
Character and behavior
Unlike other hunting breeds, the Hanoverian Scenthound has a very calm temperament. During the hunt, they show a certain strength and durability. The traditional hunting helps in making situational and intuitive solutions. This dog is very attached to his owner and the whole family. The breed is characterized by its friendship and love towards everyone. They like to hunt alone or in the company of other greyhounds.
Training and education
Training of most hunting dogs must be more stringent. It is better to have experience in growing dogs. Consistency and patience are the key to success. Despite the quiet nature of the Hanover Hound, it needs attention on dressage and monitoring during hunting. Do not deprive your pet the opportunity to move freely in the open space, providing it with the necessary physical exertion required for great health.
Representatives of the breed have good health, which is determined by their physical activity and their diets. It is necessary to periodically review your pet for inflammation of the ear canals or eye problems. Clean his ears with a damp cloth once a month. In the event of redness or discharge, immediately visit your veterinarian. The average life expectancy of the Hanoverian Scenthound is around 12 - 14 years.
Grooming and care
Like all working dogs, the Hanover Hound prefers to live close to the nature, where the dog can run and hunt. We do not recommend to raise your puppy in an urban environment.
Children and other pets
Confident and self assured , this hound is kind and amiable to its owner, but can be discerned and choosy when it comes to strangers. A perfect playmate of kids, especially when they involve the puppy in interesting games and activities like fly ball.
Like most hunting breeds, the Hanoverian Scenthound could chase and kill small animals and rodents.
These dogs are among the progenitors of the Bavarian Mountain Dogs after some crosses with other German hounds.
