History
The Lakeland Terrier, as the name suggests, comes from the region of Cumberland – an area of lakes in England. The breed is a mix between Black-and-Tan Terrier, Bedlington and other English terriers.
The English Kennel Club accepts the breed standard in 1921. Back then, it was used to hunt foxes and to guard the flocks from attacks. Today the Lakeland Terrier is used mostly as a pet and guard dog. They are friendly, loyal, cheerful and playful.
Puppies for sale of this breed are hard to find outside the UK.

Physical characteristics
The Lakeland Terrier's body is proportioned and compact. The head is rectangular, the length of the skull and muzzle must be identical. The skull is flat and moderately wide. The nose is black, not very elongated. The back is strong and of medium length. The eyes are dark-brown, black or brown. The ears are small, triangular. The tail is set high, but not turned over the back. The legs are straight and parallel, strong and muscular. The feet are small, round and fluffy. The coat is thick, sharp and impermeable. The dog can easily withstand both heat and cold.
The average height of the Lakeland Terrier is from 35 to 37 cm, and the weigh - between 7 and 8 kg.

Character and behavior
This is an active, kind, very quick, lively, but at the same time trusting, loving, sociable and sensitive dog. The Lakeland Terrier is bold and confident. It can sometimes bite, but in general, is not aggressive. Regardless of its fighting qualities, it has a soft character. The dog likes to spend time with the whole family
If it gets bored and does not spend enough energy, it is possible to scatter your home. At the same time, it is a good guard because it is distrustful of strangers and will bark when someone unknown come to your doorstep.
The combination of the qualities of a hunter and guard, combined with a friendly and cheerful character, have made the Lakeland Terrier a favorite of many Englishmen.

Training and education
The Lakeland Terrier, like all terriers, can be stubborn sometimes, so it should be trained patiently. A course of general dressage is a must. The education should start early, you have to be firm, but kind. The dog should feel the love and attention of its owners

Grooming and care
These dogs can be grown in an apartment, if you provide them with several daily walks. They need a lot of exercise - at least an hour a day.
The maintenance is not difficult at all. It is enough to ripple the thick coat every day, and to bring your pet to a professional trimmer every few months. Check the ears regularly to avoid infections caused by ticks. After eating it is good to wipe the mouth and beard of your terrier. Bathe only when absolutely necessary, otherwise you may destroy the waterproof layer of the coat. The daily amount of food must not exceed 120 g.

Health problems
This is a very healthy dog. Some representatives may suffer from inflammation of the eye, as well as dermatological problems. There are individual cases of hip and elbow dysplasia. The average life expectancy is 14 years.
Children and other pets
The Lakeland Terrier feels good in any family and gets along well both with children and adults. However, it is better to teach your kids to respect the dog and its belongings.
Can live with other dogs and cats, especially if raised with them from an early age.

Interesting facts
In the 19th century Lakeland Terrier has existed under different names - Working Terrier, Fell Terrier, Patterdale Terrier and Westmorland Terrier. The breed gained its present name in 1912, when it first appeared in a dog show.
In some countries, the Lakeland Terrier is used as an assistant in hospitals or nursing homes.
Along with the Fox Terrier, this breed was involved in the creation of the Iagd-terrier.
The durability of this terrier is incredible. Some dogs could pursue their prey, even deep underground. There have been cases where Lakelands remained in the ground for 10-12 days.
