History

The Swiss Hound (Schweizer Laufhund) is a very old breed that can be traced back to the era of Romanesque Helvetia, proof of which is a mosaic discovered in Avenches (Aventicum). In the 15th century this breed was highly sought after by Italian dog lovers and they were even more popular than the local Italian breeds in Italy. In the 18th century, it was very appreciated in France, because of its exceptional skills in hunting rabbits. At that time, listings for puppies for sale could be found in many rural regions of Europe.

There are five varieties of this breed: the Berner Laufhund. the Jura Lauhund, the Aargovtan Hound, the Luzerner Laufhund and the Schwyzer. In 1882 the standard for each variety was prepared, but in 1909 it was reviewed again. In 1933, one standard for all varieties was made. The current standard was approved by the FCI in 2001.

This breed was created to hunt alone in harsh conditions of the Swiss Alps. The dog chases mainly foxes, deers and even wild boars.

Physical characteristics

The Swiss Hound is a medium sized dog with good proportions. Its head is long and narrow without folded leather, muzzle is black, while the neck is elegant and quite muscular. Dogs ears are placed above its eyes, they are long and narrow with rounded peaks and fine hair, and hang down straight or corkscrew-precious giving it form. The dog's eyes are brown and oval.

Its limbs are healthy, muscled, parallel, without looking heavy and cumbersome. It has no rear claws, except in countries where it is prohibited to cut them. Dogs tail is not very long. It carries it horizontally or slightly curved upwards or downwards, but never curled bun or falling on its back.

Four varieties of the breed are distinguished by a color of the coat, which is dense, hard and short. In Berner Laufhund it is white with black spots and fire the head. In Jura Lauhund is yellow-brown and black on the back, at Luzerner Laufhund the coat is blue, while Schwyzer color is white with orange spots. The Aargovtan Hound disappeared quite early.

Height of males is 49-59 cm, while females are 47-57 cm tall. Average weight is about 20 kilograms.

Character and behavior

The Swiss Hound is a passionate hunter. It is obedient, quiet and strongly attached to its master. It has a very well developed sense of smell and powerful bark. These dogs are confident in themselves and can hunt in inaccessible terrain. It is better to live in a paddock, so as not to be tempted to go after a trace or a wild animal.

Due to its docile nature and obedience, this dog can be a wonderful pet.

Training and education

This breed requires hard and consistent training. It is enforceable and clever, and wants to please its master, to whom it is strongly attached. However, you should not forget its hunting instinct, self-confidence and independence. It is important to make it recognize your authority.

Grooming and care

It is best to grow your hound in a house somewhere in the country. It is difficult for these dogs to adapt to a life in the city.

This animal is not hard to maintain. You only need to comb its hair weekly with a brush and rub occasionally with a damp cloth. Bathe only when necessary.

Health problems

The Swiss Hound is healthy breed and do not suffer from genetic diseases or any pathologies. After hunting it is better to check the status of dogs ears and eyes.

Average life expectancy of this dog is around 13 to 14 years.

Children and other pets

This hound is gentle and friendly with children and loves to play with them. It is sociable and not aggressive at all. The Swiss Hound gets along perfectly with other dogs and animals. Of course, it is possible for the dog to chase after birds or rodents.

Interesting facts

When canine specialists started to prepare the single standard for the breed, they discovered that one of the varieties - Jura Lauhund type Saint-Hubert, no longer existed.
