History

Dogs with long body and short legs have appeared for the first time on frescoes in ancient Egypt about 4000 years ago. During excavations of Egyptian tombs skeletons of dogs were discovered very much reminiscent of modern Teckels. Today it is known as a hunting dog, which specialized in hunting foxes. Germany is considered as the homeland of modern Tecke. Centuries ago, Germans called the dog with a long body and short legs castor dog as it was used mainly for hunting badgers and beavers. The small hunting dog that bravely poked holes in badgers, became a favorite of middle class in Germany as it does not require a great deal of food, and does a pretty good job during the hunt. In 1870 the first standard of the breed was adopted. In the twentieth century the Teckel became popular as a decorative dog and a symbol of domesticity.

Physical characteristics

There are three sizes of Teckels. Standard, which is 35 cm high, dwarf, which is 30 centimeters high, and mini Teckel that does not even reach up to 30 centimeters. Standard Teckel weighs from 7 to 11 kg, dwarf - from 3 to 4 kg, mini Teckel - 2, 5 to 3 kg. Although it has a long body and short legs, Teckel is very mobile and plastic dog. Its head is extended, skull is flat. Jaws are strong and well developed. Eyes are neither too small nor too large. They are oval-shaped, with a friendly glance. Color is dark brown or black. Blue eyes are eligible if a Teckel has a marble coat color. Ears are positioned high on the head, with rounded edges and are quite long, without folds. Eears are very mobile. Neck is long and muscular. Chest is very well developed and sides resulted in an indentation at the end of ribs. Tail is located not very high and continues line of spine.

There are two types of Teckels depending of coat - Smooth and Long-haired. First one has a short, thick and shiny hair. Color is dark red, ginger, sandy black. Nose is black in color. The Long-haired Teckel has a pronounced beard and mustache. Ears are almost smooth, but at the bottom have long hair, like fringe. Color of fur varies from light to very dark. Tail has long hair that resemble fringe.

Character and behavior

Teckels are smart, nimble, very brave and tenacious. They have a reputation for fearlessness and at a same time fun, but most of all, they want to spend time with their owners. Character may vary depending on a type of hair. Nature of the dog depends on various factors such as heredity, socialization and training. Puppies with good temperament are curious, playful and eager to communicate with people. When you choose from different puppies for sale, don't pick the one that beats others, nor the one that stays hidden.

Training and education

The Teckel is an intelligent and good-natured dog that easily lends itself to training. It will not tolerate physical aggression during training, and may even refuse to listen and obey. The best approach is with positive methods, praise and treats.

Health problems

Teckels suffer most often from problems with the spine. They are genetically susceptible to cataracts, epilepsy, heart disease, and urinary tract. Their ears easily become infected, so it is better to be checked regularly by a specialist. Life expectancy is on average between 12 and 15 years.

Grooming and care

Coat of the Teckel should be brushed every day, while bathing is not recommended more than two or three times a year. Although it is a small dog, it needs to spend its energy because it is designed for hunting. It is better if you raise it in a yard, but in winter it should be inside because its coat is not suitable for very cold weather.

Children and other pets

Teckels are definitely not the best companions for young children. These dogs can easily be irritated and can express hostility to a little kid. Attitude towards other pets depends mostly on how well they know each other.

Interesting facts

An author of famous bestseller "Lolita," Vladimir Nabokov kept at home three teckels, as he was in love with this breed. In 1972, the Teckel Valdi was the symbol of the Olympic Games held in Munich.
