West Siberian Laïka
The Breeders work of creating a new breed - the West Siberian Laika, began in late XIX century, but a purposeful selection started in the 20's of XX century. To obtain this, they used local breeds - Manskiyski and Hantiyski Laika. The result is a perfect assistant during hunt that helps its owners in pursuit of waterfowl, wild boars, foxes and rabbits. Today, the West Siberian Laika is the most popular breed in Russia. In the middle of the twentieth century the breed became very popular in Europe and the US and puppies for sale could be found all around the world. The official standard was adopted in 1949.
Male representatives of the breed reach 62 cm in height and weight up to 24 kilograms, females are up to 58 cm high and weight up to 22 kg. Head has a wedge shape, neck is rounded. Muzzle is extended without being too pointed. Eyes are oval and slightly elongated. They are dark brown in color. Bright eyes are considered a fault. Neck is strong and muscular, chest is very well developed. Limbs are muscular, tail has a sickle shape and curled over the back or side of the body. The body is covered with thick hair that is white, Rusty, brown or gray in color. Nose is black, but if body hair is dark it can be brown.
Character and behavior
The West Siberian Laika is a breed that originated in Russia and is widespread there. It is appreciated not only for its external beauty, but also because of an undeniable performance and hunting qualities.
Dogs of this breed are energetic, clever and astute. They quickly become attached to their master and remain faithful forever. They are not at all fussy and can be grown in diverse environments.
Training and education
This dog does not need to be trained if it will be used as a helper in the hunt. It knows by nature what to do when the loot is set, but may need a command to attack or to stop an attack. The West Siberian Laika easily lends itself to training and dressage and does not require much time and patience to get required result. It is better to start training from a moment your puppy enters the house. But even perfectly trained Laika can't be stopped from chasing small animals.
This is a very durable dog that enjoys good health. The only genetically transmitted disease, typical for this breed is a problem of urinary system. The West Siberian Laika may also suffer from infections of eyes and ears, but they are very rare. In the absence of sufficient movement, it may suffer from problems with protruding nails, so it is better to regularly cut them.
Grooming and care
Coat of the West Siberian Laika should be brushed every day if possible, to keep it beautiful. The perfect place to raise it is a big yard. Still, if you grow it in an apartment, you must go out for two pretty long walks every day. It is recommended to walk your pet on a leash, as these beautiful dogs are very inquisitive and can get lost while chasing an animal or just explore the territory. The West Siberian Laika is suitable for people who lead active lifestyles, as the dog cannot lie all day. It can live through in a yard during the winter, if it has well-insulated house that does not allow snow to come in.
Children and other pets
In general, this dog gets along very well with people. It likes to spend time with children and play with them. Patient and caring, these quadrupeds would not hurt the kids. When the dog is trained for hunting purposes, it tends to show aggression towards chickens, ducks, turkeys and other birds. Its watchful eye would easily outgrew even bigger beasts as goats and sheep. They rarely show hostility to other dogs.
However, if the dog has grown up among a hunting party, but was treated as a pet, it manages to rise above their hunting instincts. With a good socialization, it may live with cats and farm animals.
However, if you have rodents like rabbits and hamsters, you should keep them away from the dog.
