April 6, 2019
Looking for an extra helping hand when you’re doing down to the lake to do a spot of fishing? Why not take your best friend?!
Some dog breeds come in handy when it comes to helping their humans snag a great catch! Dogs love to be part of the action and adventure, so it should be no surprise that they are thrilled when they get to get involved with one of the most primitive leisure activities there is.
Dogs such as Pointers, Terriers, and Retrievers are all perfect if you’re contemplating going hunting. But the skill sets dogs need for fishing differ significantly. You may be surprised to find which dog breeds made it onto our list of top 10 fisherman’s friends!
However, you’ll need to be mindful that you are taking into consideration other elements such as how well is your dog trained? And before you take your dog on a trip, you will need to ensure that the location is suitable and safe for your pet!
Many dogs love taking to the water, however, every dog is different – and it goes without saying you probably won’t want to bring a toy-size dog such as a chihuahua fishing with you!
What Makes Some Dog Breeds Good at Fishing?
Some dog breeds are literally built for the water! You’ll notice that some breeds have webbed feet. There are ten dog breeds with webbed feet which include Newfoundland dogs, Portuguese Water Dogs, American Water Spaniel, German Wirehaired Pointer, Dachshund, Weimaraner, Otterhound, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Redbone Coonhound, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
While some of those dog breeds may have webbed feet, breeds such as the Dachshund are far too small to be of any use on a fishing trip. And other breeds on the list are incredibly rare such as the Otterhound, so it wouldn’t be the best idea to suggest them to you when we know it will be impossible to get your hands on them!
Some dogs also come with waterproof coats such as the Newfoundland, Alaskan Malamutes, Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Labrador Retriever.
It is physical characteristics such as these that mean some breeds do incredibly well tolerating colder temperatures in the water while their webbed feet can enable them to move through the water with ease.
Another factor which you will need to consider is the energy levels of your dog – it should go without saying that any dogs taken for extensive and rigorous exercise should be in good health!
Trainability is also important to think about, some dogs will take to fishing immediately, however, you may need a lot of patience when it comes to convincing other dog breeds to make your fishing trip go smoothly. After all, fishing is supposed to be a relaxing experience! If your dog can follow basic commands well, it is likely that they will take to the instructions which will help you go fishing!

The Golden Boy Wins Again
With all things considered, it is looking likely that the Labrador Retriever will make the perfect fishing companion for you! Which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when you consider that they are one of the most playful and active dog breeds. On top of that, if you ever walk a Labrador near water, you can be sure that they will dive right in! Their larger than life personalities mean that they don’t like to be stuck at home sat with you on the sofa, they would really rather be outside with you, delving into whatever the world has to offer them! I’m sure that they’ll be happy enough to snuggle up with you on the sofa after a hard but enjoyable day in the great outdoors!
Even though Labradors are now seen as the ultimate family pet, that wasn’t the original intention for the line breeders who made the breed what it is today, Labradors were first used as gundogs who would be tasked with retrieving waterfowl from the water! So, you can see how there’s a very natural leap from being excellent at retrieving waterfowl, to being incredible companions on a fishing trip! Labrador Retrievers are only recommended to owners who will have large amounts of energy to expend with their pets. Labs are a breed which is highly prone to becoming obese. This may also lead to other health conditions such as hip dysplasia – therefore it is vitally important that you make sure that your Labrador Retriever is suitably exercised. To keep their minds happy and healthy plenty of exercise is essential too!
