The Canaan Dog has existed for a long time. According to the legend, the breed was created by Jezebel, wife of King Ahab of Israel. People used it as a postal dog in the army or to protect the cattle in the countryside.

Brought to America in the 1930s by Dr. Rudolfina Menzel, who also wrote its first standard approved in 1966 by FCI. In 1997 AKC also recognized the breed.

Physical characteristics

Canaan Dog is medium-sized, very fine, with nice proportions and its appearance resembles the Spitz. The head is in the form of a blunt wedge, skull is slightly rounded. The body is strong with straight lines and tight muscles. The coat is medium length, coarse and straight, the tail is bushy, curved towards the back. The color of Canaan Dog is sandy to reddish brown, white and black.

The height at the withers is 48-61 cm and the weight 16-25 kg.

Character and behavior

The Canaan Dog is loyal, loving, with honest and impatient nature. This is a smart breed and representatives can be manipulative and stubborn, making them more suitable for farmers with experience in growing dogs. It is not jealous and is independent and adaptable.

The Canaan dog is not aggressive. He is a clever watchdog, robust and durable, reliable defender and a great friend of the family. Because of these qualities, in the recent years this breed is gaining greater popularity and puppies for sale could be found all over the world.

Training and education

The high intelligence of this dog requires mental exercise. Do not let him get bored, he is capable to misbehave.

Although his past of a desert dog makes him very independent, a Canaan Dog who is well socialized loves the family and is adaptable to almost every living situation.

Life in an apartment with daily walks is as good to him as living in a countryside house with a yard and three loud children. The Canaan Dog's nature makes him unlikely to run away far from home, but just for precaution, he should be protected from dangers by a fence.

Health problems

The Canaan Dog lives on average between 12 and 15 years. The breed is prone mainly to thyroid problems and seizures. Overall, it is a relatively healthy dog. Adults must have CERF and OFA certificates.

If you want to buy a puppy, find a respected breeder who will show you health clearances for both parents. These documents prove that the dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition.

Grooming and care

There are medium level maintenance requirements for his appearance. It is necessary to comb the fur once a week to maintain its good shape. Moulting continues throughout the year, although during some seasons it decreases.

These dogs love to dig and can make a large hole in a short period. If you can, provide your pet with a digging area of his own or redirect this tendency to other exercise or sport.

Children and other pets

Representatives of the breed are distrustful and wary around strangers. This quality makes them good guards. They get along well with children, especially those with which they grew up, but may exhibit aggression in the presence of other dogs.
