The English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of dogs first mentioned by Count Gaston III de Foix, a Gascon nobleman. He devotes an entire chapter of his book to the “Espanyols”, as they are called, because he brought them to France from Spain. This breed, which adapt perfectly to different weather conditions, has been introduced in England as a gift from the Spanish king. In the UK the breed became very popular and was developed under the name Cocker Spaniel. It was widely used in Scotland and Wales mainly for hunting snipe, but it is also suitable for other types of birds. The breed was officially recognized in 1902 and in 1940 it is defined as an independent and separate from the American Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker belongs to the retrievers group, he has excellent tracking, hunting and retrieving qualities, and is also exceptionally flexible.

Physical characteristics

This is a medium sized dog with a moderately large head and large rounded forehead. His nose is black, the legs and the back of the body are well feathered. The dark oval eyes should have a gentle and intelligent expression. The brisket is very deep and well developed, but not enough to cope with heavy weights. The coat is shiny, long and soft. It has large paws with thick cushions, thick hair and webbed fingers. The tail is usually cut at a young age,. The most common color of Cockers is white with black spots, and golden-brown or black.

Males are usually about 38-43 cm tall, and females 36-41 cm. Males have a weight of about 13-16 kg, females - 12-15 kg.

Character and behavior

The English Cocker Spaniel is extremely energetic, flexible and friendly. He loves games and is a wonderful guard.
