The Field Spaniel was developed for ring show by people attempting to create a all black dog. Some of the methods were strongly criticised, because the shape and colors were not typical for a hunting breed.

The father of the English Cocker Spaniel is considered dog Ch. Obo, born in 1879 to a Field Spaniel mother and a Sussex Spaniel father. Obo's son, on the other hand, is considered the father of the American Cocker Spaniel, who is only 4 cm higher and with a longer body.

The Field Spaniel is still a rare breed in England. Only 51 dogs were registered in 2009. Of all the Spaniels enlisted in the UKC, the Field Spaniel has the lowest number of dogs registered per year. For example the English Springer Spaniel has 12,700 registered dogs and the English Cocker Spaniel – 22,211. To promote and save the breed all dogs were enlisted in the Vulnerable Native Breed Book by The Kennel Club.

Physical characteristics

The height of the Field Spaniel is between 43 and 46 cm at the withers, and the weight is usually between 18 and 25 kg. Its silky, long coat can be liver, roan or black. The coat has no undercoat. Fur feathering can appear on the belly, chest, ears and legs.

Character and behavior

The Field Spaniel is a kind family dog while he has some purpose. They are perfect for hunting and dog agility. Without some goals or tasks to achieve, these dogs can try to have fun and cause a huge mess in the house. Nevertheless, they are patient, calm and love their family. They are independent and docile in general, and are not as “crazy” as Cocker Spaniels. According to Stanley Coren's “The Intelligence of Dogs”, the breed possesses an above average working intelligence.

Training and education

If you choose rewards and motivational methods for your training, you will have a happy dog who will work with you with pleasure. These Spaniels are very sensitive dogs and do not like harsh handling or loud tones of voice. You should be firm but careful, to avoid behavior problems in the future.

Health problems

There are a some eye conditions to which the Field Spaniel is prone. These are: retinal atrophy, cataracts and retinal dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is also a common problem with British lines of dogs. In a survey conducted by the UKC, the main cause of death is cancer. The median life expectancy for the breed is exactly 11 years and 8 months, which is a little bit higher than the average age for all breeds.

When you search puppies for sale, look for a reliable breeder who makes tests tests to their dogs. Thus, you will be certain that all the puppies are free of genetic diseases.

Grooming and care

These dogs are active indoors, and therefore aren't recommended for an apartment. They would feel best with huge yard, or a garden, where they can run like hell. Keep in mind that they possess a very strong hunting instincts, and a fence will save you from troubles.

The Field Spaniel doesn't require much grooming. The coat, of course, should be brushed from time to time and bathed as needed. It is recommended to brush the teeth of your pet at least three or four times a week to remove the tartar and all the bacteria that come with it. It will also help to get rid of your dog's bad breath.

Children and other pets

The Field Spaniel is patient and kind with children, but requires some purpose in order to prevent him from becoming destructive.

They are sometimes reserved with strangers, but they are never shy, fearful or aggressive. Some dogs choose one family member to be their “best friend”, but in most cases they accept everyone in the family. They are excellent with kids, but don't like loud play and rough games. Field Spaniels will bark every time when a stranger approaches your house, but they are not good guard dogs.
